Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore

Wayside Exhibits

Michigan

Along Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore encompasses a 35-mile stretch of Lake Michigan’s shoreline, two islands, and numerous inland lakes and streams.

From 2016-2018, Nomad Studio worked with Iondesign to plan and design nearly 30 wayside exhibits that interpret the park’s rich historical and natural features, as well as orient visitors to opportunities within the park.

As part of the project, a multidisciplinary team of professionals addressed inclusiveness and accessibility using Universal Design approaches. As the “gold standard” of universally designed projects, Nomad Studio’s work is featured by the National Park Service in a series of case studies that provide guidance for the National Park Service and the public.
